No special qualifications are necessary in order to enter.

Entrants must be over 18 years of age and citizens of South Africa.

The theme for this year is “Vase-a lifestyle” and requires entrants to design and make a prototype of a vase.

Your prototype can be made from ANY material, but should be designed bearing in mind that, if successful, it will be manufactured in mainly stainless steel, pewter or aluminium.

Note: do not make your prototype from a material that is fragile or flimsy and will not maintain its shape in the posting process, such as foil, wax or unfired clay.

The size of the prototype should be true to the intended final product.

The prototype should be of a size that can realistically be manufactured and used.

A guideline for size would be a prototype that is approximately no larger than 40 x 60 cm.

The design must be both functional (it must be able to efficiently serve its purpose) and aesthetically pleasing (beautiful).

Prototypes will be judged on the following qualities:

Innovations and aesthetics of the product
Functionality of the product
Whether it is possible to manufacture the product in stainless steel, pewter or aluminium.
The possibility for the expansion of the design into other products and the development of a new range.

Applicants are encouraged to express their own individual design style and not submit prototypes that are derivative of Carrol Boyes’ style of design.

Prototypes must be packaged safely and securely to avoid breakages. Place your prototype in a firm box with plenty of soft padding in and around it to prevent it from rattling or movement in the container.

Applicants may submit multiple entries, provided each prototype has its own Entry Form and each item is clearly marked and labeled.

If applicants enter as a team or partnership, all names of the designers involved, together with their individual ID numbers, must be recorded on the official Entry Form.

The name or names marked on the official METAL 2010 Entry Form, will be the names advertised in the event of the prototype being selected as one of the winning submissions.
